The Backstory
Nicholas Kontaxis’ painting Too Da Loo is a vibrant celebration of life and artistic freedom. The exuberant primary colors and dot motif reflect Kontaxis’ joyful spirit and his ability to find beauty in repetition and persistence. Despite the physical limitations imposed by his epilepsy, Kontaxis has transformed his confined existence into a monastic devotion to art. The repetitive nature of the dots may remind some viewers of Damien Hirst’s dot paintings, but they also mirror the artist’s daily commitment to his craft, turning limitation into limitless expression. Each dot represents a moment in time, a seizure overcome, or a small victory in his artistic practice. The humorous title of this work belies the artist’s meditative approach to painting, working all day with dedicated focus, results in layers upon layers of paint that create a sense of infinity.
