In addition to finely detailed works, Nicholas has also experimented with much more gestural compositions. In Purple Rabbits, he uses a “paint over” technique, applying large swaths of color over a seemingly complete canvas. Rorschach-like forms emerge from the background, suggesting a pair of rabbits (according to Nicholas). Like the work of Franz Kline, works from these series evoke unconscious associations, sometimes unexpected, and the ultimate interpretation is up to the viewer.
